(Yelling from the living room to our son who is goofing around in his bedroom at night.) Ethan, if you don’t behave and go to bed right now, mommy and I are going to call the police!

You hear that Ethan? We are calling the police now if you don’t behave and go to bed.

Don’t call the police. Don’t call the police! I’m going to bed!

I hope we’re not doing the wrong thing by scaring him like this. I don’t want him to grow up paranoid and fear cops.

marianna

Yeah that’s true. But you know?  A healthy bit of critical distrust is not a bad thing to have.

rudy_authority

Hmm.. Ok.

Ethan, listen up!   Everybody is out to get you!  The world is your enemy!  You hear me son?!  Trust no one!

ethan_authority

Yes Dad.

marianna

What the hell is wrong with you?  I don’t want him to grow up completely paranoid and afraid of everyone and everything. I want him to be able to trust people and go to the police for help when he needs it.

rudy_authority

Good point.

Hey Ethan! Listen up!  Trust everyone. Do everything others tell you to do. You hear me boy?! Obey authority without question!

ethan_authority

Yes Dad.
